If she’s feeling discomfort she’ll let you know. She does everything by her own set of rules, and is very vocal about her opinion. Jessica truly marches to the beat of her own drum, in a way that is truly profound. Has the character of Jessica Jones inspired you directly? I think it would be nice to see how we could push the superhero costume in the future. Sometimes I wish that they were a little more varied, a little less slick more tactile, let's say. But personally, I do think in recent years they’ve gotten a bit samey. It’s exciting to see people suiting up to be their best selves. What’s your opinion of superhero costumes? And I think Jessica herself would laugh at the idea of a superhero costume. I think that helps keep the character feel more real to people, more relatable. Kind of the point, in a way she’s a superhero who doesn’t wear a costume. But one of the wonderful things about shows and movies based on superhero comics is that there can be two versions of one character.ĭoes Jessica wear anything close to a “traditional” superhero costume in this season? Fans of the comics might notice that certain scenes of the show are in fact lifted from the comics, which makes for some nice easter eggs, a homage or two. Marvel's Jessica Jones David Giesbrecht/Netflixĭo you ever still refer back to the comic books? It certainly makes for an interesting experience. You have to make sure you’re working within your own creative license, while making sure you’re paying homage and respect to what’s come before you. And because it’s a very beloved character, there’s a lot of due diligence to be paid to that history. What are the unique challenges of working in the superhero genre?įrom a practical perspective, there's a challenge in costuming a show where you know there's going to be a very heavy stunt component to it. It can be quite challenging, because cotton and denim aren’t exactly designed to withstand fire, to be stained by dirt and blood. You also have to make sure the costume looks seamless, with all the stunt padding underneath. So you need to have multiple sets of the costume, just in case something tears, or gets dirty. The more prepared you are, the better off you’ll be. You need to know what’s going to be asked of the actors and their stunt doubles, making sure you’re having the right meetings with the stunt coordinator and the director. How did you prepare the costumes for the fight scenes? I think day-to-day, her clothes are not necessarily representative of her current state, but as a whole, her closet meets her needs. She rides that masculine/feminine line very closely. She chooses things like strong denim, leather, sturdy boots, things that offer some physical protection but don’t completely rob her of her shape, her femininity. Well, Krysten a nd I would always say that Jessica probably picks up what's on the floor closest to her and throws it on (laughs). How do Jessica’s outfits reflect her emotional journey across the season? I’ve lived in New York all my life, and as a young woman in the city, there’s definitely a specific level of grit.Įka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse David Giesbrecht/Netflix That was definitely something I wanted to bring more to the character. I used the downtown women of New York as an inspiration. So having meetings with Krysten, getting to know her both as an actress and as a creative - her characterization of Jessica was essential to get me inside the character’s head.Īnd New York. She’s a tour de force in many ways, she is in complete command of that character. That has everything to do with my relationship with Krysten Ritter. It’ll still feel like the same Jessica, but just a bit fresher.īefore you started work on season 2, how did you get inside Jessica’s head? We made little tweaks here and there to how her look has evolved - we’ve changed the denim, we’ve changed the boots. It removes a slight layer between her and the audience. So we’re immediately starting off without that scarf, and, in a sense, it puts Jessica in a more vulnerable place.
