He will pose as Winnie’s best friend-thereby cashing in on his celebrity status-while participating in ten TikTok #bestfriend challenges with her. When Winnie discovers she needs to increase her number of online followers to land an important job, Byron surprisingly offers to help. Byron is a brilliant and famous bestselling author and a self-professed grumpy recluse who dislikes almost everyone-apparently, even Winnie. She’s a vivacious people person whom everyone loves, but the one person she dislikes is Byron. Winnie is a poor middle school science teacher who uses social media to inspire girls to pursue STEM careers. *sigh* Halfway through the book, I closed my Kindle and shouted out loud, “I love these characters!” #truestory The fact that they are so different appealed to me. Having said all that, I would read this book again. Those are not the thoughts I should have when reading a romantic comedy. I’m glad they are both self-aware enough to recognize they have issues, but I almost wanted them to seek counseling before committing to a relationship. The level of insecurity that JP and Kelsey display is frankly unhealthy. The way I see it, the book has three settings: fantastically funny, incredibly romantic, and terribly sad. Meghan Quinn rewards readers for their patience with some top-notch groveling and steamy sexy times. There’s a fine line between an enjoyable slow burn and utter frustration, and I walked a tightrope across this story. JP and Kelsey’s relationship is a two steps forward, one step back journey. I loved all the fun and thoughtful outings he plans for Kelsey. He should write a Romantic Dates for Dummies book because he sure knows how to wine and dine a gal. JP gives Kelsey the impression that he’s nothing more than a playboy, but he’s secretly a vulnerable, kindhearted philanthropist and romantic. She keeps putting herself out there despite multiple rejections and miscues. Kelsey is a die-hard romantic who chases after love. (The penthouse scene made me laugh so hard and for so long that I couldn’t catch my breath.) The clever ways they provoke and one-up each other lead to some scenarios that had me in stitches. They can’t be in the same room for five seconds without arguing, and I must say their bickering is freaking hilarious. Kelsey doesn’t even try to hide how much she dislikes JP, and he is like a big kid acting out because he doesn’t know what to do about his crush. Kelsey and JP are siblings of Lottie and Huxley from A Not So Meet Cute. The By a Thread audiobook is narrated by Erin Mallon, who never disappoints. I think Faith could have a fun story of her own to tell. I loved Abby’s best friend who happens to own a strip club. Not too shabby for two characters in their 40s!Ībby’s relationship with her aging, ailing father is touching. Break your fans out because when they finally get it together, they burn the house down with their chemistry and Dominic’s fluent dirty talk. Their love/hate relationship is hilarious and magnetic. If anything, she delights in riling him up. He quickly becomes obsessed with Ally without her even trying. Dominic’s slowly unraveling cool demeanor is a joy to behold. There’s something satisfying about a strong man being brought to his knees by a woman. She gives as good as she gets with Dominic, whereas everyone else is intimidated by the handsome, taciturn, powerful alphahole. Even in the face of financial desperation and a family crisis, she manages to remain optimistic and resourceful. She is fiercely Independent (yes, the capital “I” is necessary). It’s warm, funny, hotter than Hades, and I was glued to every entertaining moment. Lucy Score flaunts her dirty birdy side in By a Thread, a grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers office rom com.
